BMHA - Player Eligibility, Registration, Player Movement and Refund Policy
1. Eligibility for registration
In order to be eligible to register with Blackfalds Minor Hockey Association as your MHA(Minor Hockey Association), you must meet one of the following criteria:
a. You are a resident of Blackfalds - your primary residence is in Blackfalds catchment area (see boundary map on our webpage)*
b. You are a first time registrant in a Hockey Canada sanctioned league.
c. Provide proof of extenuating circumstances, and if necessary, obtain a release from the MHA where you were last registered.
d. You have completed two full seasons with BMHA. A player will be considered a “Resident” once they have completed 2 seasons with BMHA and are in good standing. (Players registered to BMHA for both the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 seasons will be grandfathered into this clause)
*BMHA reserves the right to request proof of residency or other documents to use in validating requests to register with BMHA. If you are part of another association and meet one of the above criteria, you will still require a release before the registration process can begin.
2. Registration for BMHA will be granted on the following basis
a. Resident Only Registration will open up at least 1 month before general registration. - In the case where waitlists are needed due to registration numbers, preference will be given to those players who were members in good standing with BMHA the year prior (ex: During early bird registration, if you were the first person to register with BMHA but were not a member in good standing the year prior, all returning members who register during the ”Resident Only Registration” period would be given priority to registration over yourself)
b. General Registration will open July 2nd.
- Non-resident players will be charged a fee of $200 per season per player. (some exceptions may apply ie: no team rostered for the age division in the player’s home boundary)
- When General Registration opens, the previous year’s status will be irrelevant, and all registration will be granted on a first-come basis.
c. BMHA will implement a soft cap for all registrations up to August 15th, or until ice is allocated by the Town of Blackfalds. This is to ensure we do not over-extend our registration and surpass our allotted ice for the season. After the ice is finalized, soft caps will be released and hard caps will be established. Wait lists will be used to determine if more teams need to be added for an age division.
d. BMHA will exhaust every avenue to ensure all kids who wish to play hockey will have an opportunity to do so. If BMHA cannot accommodate a player, a full refund will be given and we will assist in finding placement with an alternate association.
e. When registering for tryouts with elite teams, you will also need to fully register with BMHA to be guaranteed a spot on a BMHA team if released from the elite team tryouts.
- If you are selected to an elite team roster, you will be refunded for your BMHA registration fees. (this may take up to 30 days)
3. Player Movement
a. Players who wish to exit BMHA to play with another association must show reasonable circumstances for doing so, and obtain the necessary release documentation from BMHA.
- Player movement forms can be obtained through the home association’s administration.
b. Players residing within a different association's catchment who played with BMHA last season, have reverted back to their resident association at the conclusion of the season. This process will change next season, once a player is registered to a MHA they will remain with that MHA until a transfer is approved; as per the new Hockey Canada regulations.
c. Players who are accepted into BMHA on a one-year release (shared/temporary transfer) from their home association will automatically revert back to their home association at the conclusion of that season.
4. Refund Policy
a. No refunds will be granted as of September 15th or the start date of evaluations, whichever is first.
b. No refunds will be given if a player evaluates in Blackfalds and chooses not to play on their rostered team.
c. Refunds will be granted for players who can show medical or extenuating circumstances for cancelling their registration. (ex: broken limb or injury preventing ability to play, family moving outside a reasonable driving distance)
- Refunds will be docked a $125 administrative fee and calculated/prorated based on the last date of play.
